Stone lookout collapses during earthquake — Panic erupts in the face of an unthinkable catastrophe
In a shocking turn of events that has left survivors and witnesses alike reeling, a powerful earthquake struck the region early Tuesday morning, causing the sudden collapse of a historic stone lookout point known as “El Mirador del Águila ,” located high above the valley. What began as a peaceful morning of sightseeing turned into a nightmare no one could have imagined.
A morning of beauty that ended in tragedy
“El Mirador del Águila,” as the locals called it, was a popular tourist destination, located on the edge of a cliff and famous for its panoramic views of the mountains and forests. That morning, the spot was packed with families, hikers, and photographers eager to capture the sunrise. The sky had just begun to turn golden when the earth shook violently beneath their feet.
Eyewitnesses reported that the first tremors were gentle, almost imperceptible, but within seconds they transformed into a violent jolt. In less than 30 seconds, what had previously seemed solid became a death trap. The imposing stone structure, which had stood for almost a century, crumbled like sand. The railings twisted and broke, and enormous blocks of stone tumbled into the abyss.
Total panic as the earth shook
The scene was one of absolute chaos. People were screaming, some were kneeling in prayer, others were running in all directions looking for solid ground, but the narrow paths and sharp rocks offered little protection.
“It sounded like the mountain was roaring,” said Mara Jenkins , a survivor who had briefly stepped back from the viewing platform to take a photo. “Suddenly, the entire platform disappeared. People were falling. The screams… I’ll never forget those screams.”
The collapse shook not only the earth but also the hearts of those who witnessed it. Survivors clung to trees, rock overhangs, or each other, while dense clouds of dust rose from the rubble. The quake lasted less than a minute, but the disaster it left behind was devastating.
First aid in the midst of danger
Emergency services arrived within an hour, but rescue efforts were hampered by the treacherous terrain and aftershocks. Helicopters circled the wreckage, searching for signs of life, while rescuers worked tirelessly and with limited equipment to extract survivors from the rubble. Many of those on or near the lookout point remain missing or seriously injured.
“This is one of the most complex rescue operations we’ve ever faced,” said emergency chief André Molina . “Access is extremely difficult. The debris is unstable. And time is not on our side.”
Pain, questions and an urgent search for answers
Entire families gathered in nearby shelters, holding photographs of loved ones who had climbed to the observation deck and never returned. Some held out hope; others, only silence.
Beyond the immediate grief, a growing sense of outrage and confusion begins to emerge:
How could such a tragedy happen so suddenly? Why did the structure collapse completely?
Although the observation deck has undergone inspections in recent years, some are already questioning the rigor of those assessments. Others wonder if the original design contemplated a seismic event of this magnitude.
Authorities have promised a thorough investigation.
“We owe the victims and their families answers,” Infrastructure Minister Dana Lewes said during a press conference Tuesday night.
