“El Mirador del Águila,” as the locals called it, was a popular tourist destination, located on the edge of a cliff and famous for its panoramic views of the mountains and forests. That morning, the spot was packed with families, hikers, and photographers eager to capture the sunrise. The sky had just begun to turn golden when the earth shook violently beneath their feet.
Eyewitnesses reported that the first tremors were gentle, almost imperceptible, but within seconds they transformed into a violent jolt. In less than 30 seconds, what had previously seemed solid became a death trap. The imposing stone structure, which had stood for almost a century, crumbled like sand. The railings twisted and broke, and enormous blocks of stone tumbled into the abyss.
Total panic as the earth shook
